Listing of Brain Injury Associations (USA)

Access to information, services, and resources is critical to improving the lives of individuals with brain injury and their families. With this in mind, we are providing a list of most states, along with links to their respective Brain Injury Associations.  The websites of these organizations typically provide detailed information on various topics, including Support Groups, Professional Services, Legal Services, Financial Assistance, Educational Services, Employment Support, Recreational Opportunities, and other relevant areas.

If your state is not listed, you can contact https://bia.org for more information

National Association Of State Head Injury Administrators (Nashia)

Since 1990, the National Association of State Head Injury Administrators has been fulfilling its mission of empowering state governments and their partners to enhance collaboration and strengthen capabilities to address the needs of individuals with brain injuries and their support systems.

NASHIA is the leading source of information and education for state employees who support public brain injury programs. NASHIA provides information on national trends, best practices, and state contacts to federal agencies, state and national associations, and brain injury partners across the nation. NASHIA provides technical assistance to state governments and their partners as well as collective representation on federal policy issues through its membership.

STATE PROFILES

Below you will find links to profiles* for most states that describe the diverse service delivery systems for individuals with brain injuries across the country. This is intended to explore the support mechanisms designed to meet the specific needs of individuals with brain injuries. It’s essential to acknowledge that each state’s approach to supporting individuals with brain injuries can vary significantly. States are working diligently to implement a wide range of initiatives, including resource coordination and training programs, as well as partnerships with other federal agencies. These efforts reflect a collective commitment to enhancing the quality of life and well-being of individuals affected by brain injuries.

While the State Profiles aim to be comprehensive, there are challenges inherent in capturing a comprehensive picture of brain injury prevalence and service delivery in each State. The state data referenced throughout may be flawed, as national and State data are incredibly lacking. Most estimates come solely from data collected through emergency department admissions or hospital stays, which is not reflective of the total population. Additionally, it is essential to consider the dynamic nature of State support systems, which are subject to frequent updates and modifications, reflecting the evolving needs and priorities within each State. It’s essential to acknowledge that the fluid nature of State systems may limit our access to information.   *If your state is missing a link to the website, contact the person at the email address provided.
